As a two-way communications channel, Social media offers up an important opportunity for TNC to engage directly with its audiences. Community engagement, comments and dialogue help us build stronger relationships with our audience.

Below are vetted responses to use in social media based on a variety of anticipated comments or questions. Our tactic is to reply once when necessary and always adhere to our Social Media Community Engagement Guidelines.

Addressing Diversity

Addressing Comments about Diversity

Occassionaly, we get comments on our social channels that challenge our perspective, beliefs and thinking around diversity. This messaging accounts for common questions we recieve and thoughtful ways to address them.

Note: It is recommended to avoid using ‘BIPOC’ as shorthand – supporters who are complaining about our DEI positions most likely have not invested the time to educate themselves about these issues and are unlikely to know what this acronym means. Spell it out in any replies: Black, Indigenous and People of Color. As well as: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

In addition to X (e.g. land conservation, wildlife conversation), our work focuses on ensuring that nature and people thrive everywhere. TNC is committed to listening, learning, uplifting, being better and ensuring that conservation is truly for all.

(Alternative) We do care about land conservation. But we know real conservation is about thriving people and a healthy planet.

Part of TNC's vision is to create a world where people and nature thrive. The natural world can only thrive when all people – of all communities – thrive.

(Alternative) We envision a world where people – of all communities – and nature thrive.

Where there is injustice to people, there is injustice to the earth. Part of TNC's vision is to create a world where people and nature thrive – all people.

(Alternative) People injustice = planet injustice. Our vision is a world where people (all people) AND nature thrive.

Ensuring the safety and respect of our colleagues and partners, pushing for equal access to nature, building communities where both nature and people thrive – this IS the real work of conservation.

(Alternative) When it comes to the real work of conservation, we must: 1) ensure the safety and respect of all to enjoy nature; 2) stand up for equal access to nature; 3) build communities where all people and nature can thrive.

Global threats to the environment do not discriminate – and in fact disproportionately impact marginalized communities – therefore it is incumbent upon us to increase the diversity of voices working to truly make change.

(Alternative) People on the front lines of climate change must at the table when we develop solutions.

Diversity isn't just a nice to have – it is essential to TNC's mission.

(Alternative) Diversity isn’t just a nice-to-have. For TNC, it is mission critical.

Our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion means we welcome and encourage productive, authentic and sometimes difficult conversations.

We welcome tough and authentic conversations as a central part of making progress on the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion front. We are ready to listen.

Global threats to the environment do not discriminate among backgrounds, beliefs and cultures. Our conservation work requires a rich blend of perspectives, ideas and viewpoints that only a truly diverse workforce can provide. Read more about our Diversity and Inclusion efforts here: https://www.nature.org/en-us/about-us/careers/diversity-and-inclusion/

We’ll never have a world where people and nature thrive if we don’t see People of Color and truly recognize their experiences with the natural world.

We’re ready to listen, we’re committed to learning and we’re ready to make sure our conservation work is truly for all.

We can’t save the planet without involving people whose lives and livelihoods depend on the very places we seek to conserve.

We can’t heal the natural world without addressing the harm caused to Black, Indigenous and People of Color, who’ve long been silenced when it comes to environmental issues.

At TNC, our core values encourage us to respect and learn from a variety of experiences and ways of thinking.

Real conservation is built on the contributions of people with diverse backgrounds, experiences and identities.

Support for Pride Month

Support for Pride Month

Expressing support for Pride – a global movement for inclusivity and tolerance – demonstrates TNC’s ongoing commitment to respect people and diversity. The responses below were crafted to guide social conversations around our support for the LGBTQ+ community.

Support for the LGBTQ+ community is a demonstration of humanity and inclusion and our values in action.

We recognize that conservation is best advanced by the leadership and contributions of people of diverse backgrounds, beliefs and cultures. Our work can only succeed if it genuinely represents the future that we are trying to create.

TNC is committed to being an organization that recognizes, understands, values and leverages the diversity of its staff and constituents.

Pride is a global movement for inclusivity and tolerance. Our support for the LGBTQ+ community is not a political statement – it is a demonstration of humanity and our values in action.

LGBTQ+ people from all walks of life are deeply committed to conservation, and our mission depends on their leadership and support.

We deeply value all people, including LGBTQ+ communities, in our efforts to protect the lands and waters on which all life depends.

LGBTQ+ people have played a significant role in advocating for and modeling diversity, equity, and inclusion in conservation to remind us that nature is welcoming to all.

Diversity isn't just a nice to have – it is essential to TNC's mission. We remain committed to ensuring the safety and respect of our colleagues and partners, pushing for equal access to nature and building communities where both nature and people thrive. We are proud to stand with the LGBTQ+ community. More on our diversity and inclusion efforts, here: https://www.nature.org/en-us/about-us/careers/diversity-and-inclusion/

Pride is about embracing our organization's values of respect, diversity and inclusion, while uplifting the accomplishments of the LGBTQ+ community.

At TNC, we celebrate diversity and the strength it brings to our mission: protecting the lands and waters on which ALL life depends.

Pride is a time for celebration and joy – and also a reminder that the fight for freedom and equality is not over, and no one is truly free until all are free.

No matter how you choose to celebrate, we wish you a Happy Pride.

Donor Relationship Management

Donor Relationship Management on Social Channels

Responses that address comments from individuals claiming they will no longer donate to TNC based off content shared on our social media channels.

Note: TNC’s overall approach to member complaints is that it’s highly unlikely we’re going to change anyone’s mind in a short, written exchange. Our goal is to respectfully state TNC’s reasoning and let the donor make whatever decision is right for them.
Additionally, “Thank you for sharing your thoughts/concerns” is always a good way to start any response. Consider a simple “thank you” acknowledgement whenever possible at the start of any response.
Finally, we generally don’t engage directly on comments/threats about discontinuing donating.  Avoid responses like “we hate to see you go” or “we hope you’ll stick with us.” If addressing the donor’s giving is necessary, we recommend: “We are grateful for your support of The Nature Conservancy and respect your personal decisions about which organizations you choose to donate to.”

Thank you for reaching out to us with your concerns. TNC believes that part of a healthy natural world includes making sure that all people have access to what they need to thrive. This belief means addressing inequity that deny Black, Indigenous and People of Color communities of those resources. We invite you to join us in our commitment in supporting both nature and communities.

As an organization, we seek to grow and learn from our history. We join many conservation organizations in committing to do better for our Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) employees who have been excluded from recognition for their work, as well as partners and community members who have not benefitted from conservation projects. We believe it is our responsibility to stand in solidarity with BIPOC caretakers of the planet to fulfill our mission. We thank you for your support.

Thank you for your support. Our strength and vitality lie in being a united force for nature, working together in local places and across borders with all our supporters to achieve our global mission. We value these collaborative efforts that are so essential to our success.

We need everyone working together if we are going to solve complex conservation problems at scales that matter and in ways that endure. We thank you for your support.

Our strength and vitality lie in being a united force for nature, working together to protect our planet. So we're doing all we can to elevate, support and amplify Black, Indigenous and People of Color voices that love and advocate for nature and the environment. We cannot stay silent on racism if we are to fulfill our vision of creating a world in which both nature and people thrive. Thanks for your support.

Elevating Black Voices

Elevating Black Voices

As Social Media Marketers, we have commited to leveraging our social channels to elevate Black voices in conservation.

As a large and diverse community of environmentalists who aim to protect nature for everyone, one step towards lasting change is a commitment to learning more and amplifying Black voices in the conservation space.

Global threats to the environment do not discriminate – and in fact disproportionately impact marginalized communities – therefore it is incumbent upon us to increase the diversity of voices working to truly make change.

We’re committed to doing our part by elevating and highlighting #blackjoy in the great outdoors. We welcome you to get outside for a healthy hike! Thanks.

We're amplifying the names and experiences of those who are under-represented as nature lovers and environmentalists. We hope you choose to learn more about it.

Politics

Politics

Social Media is a primary channel for TNC to advance policy solutions that work for people and nature in the U.S. and in countries around the world. These responses are often met witih polarizing opinions and responses and should be moderated thoughtfully.

TNC has worked with elected officials from both parties for decades in a collaborative, non-partisan manner. That will continue.

The Nature Conservancy is non-partisan. While we don't engage in politics, we do engage on policy matters critical to our mission. TNC simply can't achieve our mission without policies that set the rules in a way that enables and ensures investments in positive conservation outcomes.

We've worked with elected officials from across the political spectrum throughout our history and will continue to do so. TNC will always advocate for achievable, lasting solutions that advance our mission. A lot of work needs to be done to address the climate emergency, protect lands and waters, promote justice and more, and we are committed to pursuing these goals.

TNC is non-partisan, as we have been throughout our history. We believe that’s how you get the best and most lasting positive results. We bring people together in all that we do, and that is true with our policy work, too.

We’re transparent about our policy work and positions – and invite you to dive deeper on our website’s policy pages: nature.org/policy. You’ll see we have a history of supporting what we believe are positive conservation policies and actions, regardless of the political party of who does them.

When it comes to commenting on public policies, we call it like we see it as a science-based and non-partisan organization. We stand up for what we believe in and what our science says we must do to achieve our mission.

TNC has and will continue to work collaboratively with all sectors of society. This makes us stronger.
